The Intelligent Flexible Robotics and Assembly (IFRA) Group at Cranfield is a leader in advanced automation and assembly solutions, focusing on the development of intelligent, flexible systems to enhance manufacturing adaptability. Their innovations in human-robot interaction, emotion recognition, and specialised robotics aim to improve efficiency, safety and productivity across various industries.

IFRA provides strong expertise in the design and implementation of intelligent, flexible systems. As part of Cranfield’s Centre for Robotics and Assembly, our focus is on creating technologies that enhance the adaptability and responsiveness of manufacturing systems, ensuring they can efficiently manage the complexities of modern production demands.

IFRA has advanced human-robot interaction (HRI) and emotion recognition technologies to ensure seamless collaboration between humans and robots in complex manufacturing settings. These innovations collectively push the boundaries of automation, improving safety, efficiency and productivity in various industries.

At IFRA, we have pioneered the development of a 5-axis customised pick-and-place robot, along with a range of specialised grippers, including high payload flexible grippers capable of handling weights between 15kg and 25kg. These innovations are tailored to meet the specific needs of contemporary manufacturing environments, offering precise and efficient handling of diverse materials and components. IFRA has pioneered algorithms that automate programming and configuration data generation, minimising manual reprogramming and increasing responsiveness in manufacturing systems.

Our work extends to the development of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) that dynamically adjust to real-time changes, significantly improving operational efficiency and product quality. We are also deeply involved in cutting-edge projects, such as robotics 3D X-ray imaging for aerospace and reconfigurable robotics for responsive manufacturing, which highlight our commitment to innovation and addressing critical challenges in automation.

Beyond technology development, IFRA ensures these advancements are seamlessly integrated into existing systems, with a strong emphasis on human-robot interaction, adaptable safety features, and scalable solutions. Through collaborative research and industry partnerships, IFRA plays a pivotal role in enhancing the UK's manufacturing competitiveness, driving productivity, and contributing to a more resilient and advanced manufacturing landscape.
