The course gives an introduction to the dynamics of quadrotors and other multirotor aircraft, and explains how they can be controlled using simple control design methods. The course includes MATLAB/Simulink modelling, simulation and analysis.
This one day course covers the basics of the dynamics and control of multirotor vehicles, in particular quadrotors. These configurations are becoming increasingly important for both manned applications (e.g. air-taxis), and unmanned (drones). However the configuration is unstable and hence requires feedback control for safe operation.
The course covers the basics of the dynamics of such vehicles and the stabilization and control for basic operation using both classical and simple optimal control approaches. The theory is supported by design, simulation and analysis in MATLAB/Simulink. On completion of the course delegates will understand the need for feedback control and the relationship between the control system and the vehicle dynamics.
Module Leader: James Whidborne
James has 25 years experience in the theory and application of advanced robust control with noted contributions in the areas of quadrotor control, multi-objective control design, finite-wordlength implementations, feedback flow control and directional drilling control.
