Course structure

This 5-day course comprises a mixture of classroom instruction and hands-on practical work and examples in the Defence Academy Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory (SSEL).

What you will learn

On successful completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental representations, techniques and processes underpinning real time 3D computer graphics,
  • Describe the role and capabilities of graphics programming libraries and engines,
  • Discuss the different techniques for creating and rendering scenes, and identify those relevant to given applications,
  • Appraise the issues in specifying and designing real- time computer graphics systems for Defence uses,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the tools and methods used in creating suitable content for Synthetic Environments, by using those tools to construct their own functional and implementable 3D models that could be placed in a variety of Synthetic Environments.

Core content

  • Coordinate systems and transforms,
  • 3D Printing and CAD Modelling,
  • Rendering techniques,
  • Graphics application programming,
  • Graphics hardware and architectures,
  • Games technologies and engines,
  • Applications of real-time computer graphics, including standards.

Upgrade to a professional qualification

When taken as a Short Course for Credit, 10 credit points can be put towards the Defence and Security (Technology) MSc or Defence Simulation and Modelling MSc.

Who should attend

Building on a common core of basic principles, the course is streamed to address two different user communities:

  • those designing and/or implementing scientific visualisation solutions,
  • those seeking to be educated customers of defence real-time interactive virtual environments, typically being involved in acquiring, specifying, managing or operating such solutions.
