Background

Dr. Alam is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) focusing on flight dynamics modelling, simulation and control of flexible fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

He is the Deputy Course Director of MSc. in Aerospace Dynamics.

At Cranfield, he is leading the further development of the Cranfield Aircraft Accelerated Loads Model (CA2LM) framework which is used for performance analysis of flexible aircraft. CA2LM software is an aeroservoelastic simulation software tool developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment and is capable of real-time simulations and analysis. He is also in charge of flight testing, modelling and simulation of the two aircraft, Saab340B and Scottish Bulldog Aviation, operated by the National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC).

Dr. Alam was the winner of the 2020 Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Herbert Le Sueur Award in recognition of his research into increase flight safety. As a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Liverpool, he designed several novel technologies to aid the helicopter pilots make a successful autorotation manoeuvre during an emergency like engine failure. The research was done in collaboration with Georgia Institute of Technology, USA funded by The US Army.

In his PhD research, he developed several robust INS/GNSS nonlinear estimation techniques using extend Kalman filter (EKF) of various architecture. The estimation techniques were verified on several vehicles such as light Aircraft, fast jet, highspeed boat, car, railway, and zeppelin. The algorithm is currently implemented in one of the railway systems by Ceské dráhy - Czech Railway) in the Czech Republic.

Dr. Alam received the PhD in 2018 from Czech Technical University in Czech Republic and Erasmus Mundus double master's degree in 'Joint European Master in Space Science and Technology' known as SpaceMaster with a specialization in Systems and Controls at the Lulea University of Technology, Sweden and Czech Technical University, Czech Republic in 2013 funded by Erasmus Mundus Fellowship He graduated with a BEng in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool in 2011.

Dr. Alam is an Associate Editor and reviewer of several journals in the field of Aerospace Engineering and Control Theory.
