Patrick started his career in industry as Assis-tant Engineer at GEC (H.K.) and then as Application Engineer at Polytek Engineering Co. (H.K.).
In 1986, he began his academic career as a Researcher at PolyU. In 1987, he won a British Council Scholarship to undertake postgraduate studies at Sheffield University. Since 1988, he has had held academic positions at the University of South Wales, Robert Gordon University, and University of Hertfordshire.
In 2002, he joined 果酱视频官网, where he is currently a Full Professor in Electrical Engineering. He has been an active volunteer in his professional services, including serving as a Chairman of the IEEE UKRI Power Electronics Chapter from 2007-2013. Currently he is the Chairman of the IEEE UKRI Young Professionals, and is Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions in Power Electron-ics, and IET Power Generation Journal. He has over 140 technical publications in electrical machines and drives.
He sits on several international Committees, including the IEEE IAS Electrical Machine Committee, and the IEEE IES Electrical Machine Technical Committee. He has been regularly invited as keynote speaker at national and international conferences. A Senior Member of the IEEE, he won many awards including the 2006 DTI Innovation Award, and most recently the 2011 IET Premium Award in Electric Power Applications.
Current activities
Professor Luk undertakes both basic and applied research in electric machines and drives, with major emphasis on:
Power-dense and torque-dense machines for high performance applications, including superconducting machines for future electric aircraft
Low cost sustainable machines that are not exposed to the risks of material supply chain due to political and environmental factors
On power electronics, he undertakes research in:
Converters with advanced switching schemes for electric motors
Resonance converters for wireless power transfer
Interfacing smart grids with renewable and other energy sources, including electric vehicles
Working closely with industry and academic collaborators at national and international levels, his research is supported by both government and industry, and with definitive paths for commercialization where appropriate.
