This project, in collaboration with CCm Technologies, aims to demonstrate mechanisms unpinning carbon-capture-based organo-mineral fertilisers (OMFs) on nutrient mineralisation to meet crop demand, including imaging of root architecture. There is a component which involves greenhouse gas emissions related to these fertilisers. The experiment is being conducted in a glasshouse involving 24 large pots (ca 210 litres, also known as lysimeters) using one formulation (10N) at four doses below the optimum, MF (mineral fertiliser), and control, all in four replications. These pots are irrigated with moisture levels monitored at three depths using sensors to correlate it with the nutrient profile.

Progress update

The results showed that the OMFs produced spring wheat biomass of around 0.5 kg/m2 in all the treatments, with no significant differences. In addition, there was no significant fertiliser impact on soil total carbon, total nitrogen and total organic carbon between different treatments. The root development results show significant root length and volume growth in the third depth of the lysimeter with 75% OMF treatments. However, no significant difference was observed in root development between the treatments. Further work is ongoing with the current crop being winter wheat.
